Obituary of Madeline A de Vere
Obituary
Madeline Angeline Lucille de Vere was born on August 12, 1923 in Queens, New York to Marie (Benton) Woody and Arthur Benton. Madeline, affectionately called, “Maddie,” attended P.S. 164 Elementary School in Manhattan. She graduated from Straubenmuller Textile High School, which is now known as Norman Thomas High School. Maddie found time to complete several courses at Bronx Community College. Right after graduation she and her sister, Alice Tiller, went to work in Washington D.C. Shortly after returning to New York; she met and married Louis St. Rose de Vere. Of that union, three children were produced. Maddie held a position at Bronx Community College as an Administrative Assistant. The student aides and supervisors affectionately called her, “The Sergeant,” due to her penchant for being a stickler of following correct office procedures.
Music and dancing was a highlight in Maddie’s life. You would see her dancing at any event she attended. She enjoyed Broadway shows, musicals and singing. Church and developing positive relationships were a large part of her life as well.
After retiring in 1989, she participated in selling knickknacks and trinkets at numerous flea markets. At the senior center, Maddie put her production skills to use by arranging sing-a-longs and comedy skits.
Maddie leaves behind her younger sister, Agnes Dixon of Texas, three children Larry, Pamela & Patrice, and granddaughter, Niara. Her adopted grandkids, Adrianne, Quianna, Angela and Ayomide. Nieces Beverly Murphy, Renee and Denise de Vere, nephews Bryan Roberts and Leonard de Vere. Godchildren, Andreii Lynch and Gail Purville and a host of other family and friends.
The family would like to thank all who supported us and loved Madeline.
Lovingly submitted,
