Obituary of George Henry Hall
Born the ninth child of Elouise Wright and James Hall Sr., George Henry Hall (affectionately nick named “Condunk” and/or “Bumpy”) was born on Dec 4, 1931. Educated in South Carolina, he loved to play sports and loved to make people laugh. George was baptized at an early age at Greenland Baptist Church where he sang on the Children’s Choir. You could find George at Sunday Services at Greenland whenever he was in South Carolina.
In 1954, George moved to Harlem with his older brother Isaac, and later to Great Neck with his brother Elijah to work with Anderson Sanitation Service, from which he retired in 1996. George loved his family and worked hard to provide for them (including as a custodian cleaning several banks in Port Washington, maintaining lawns and gardens, and chauffeuring). After retirement, he took great pride in his custodial duties at First Baptist Church, helping to maintain his church home and opening it daily for the schoolchildren. He faithfully sang on the Mass and Male Choirs of First Baptist until becoming ill. He never ceased to provide loving words and encouragement to all he encountered.
After meeting Dorothy Mae (Dot) Middleton in 1949, they married in the Spring of 1957. A notoriously hard worker, he took the role of patriarch very seriously, happily and generously providing for his family and friends, gladly lending a helping hand to anyone in need. The open doors of their home in East Elmhurst was the initial home for many family members coming North to start a new life.
Joining First Baptist Church of East Elmhurst in 1958, George and Dot became the parents to many, and their home became a safe haven for many more. He lived his life by the adage “God Loves You and so do I”, instilling the values of love and labor in all of his biological and spiritual children. His life centered around the Lord, his family with hard work in every facet.
Blessed to retire in 1999, George loved to travel; especially to visit family and friends. He returned to his birthplace in South Carolina as often as possible. A member of the King Solomon Lodge No. 8 since 1969, George served as the Chaplain.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Elouise Wright and James Hall Sr.; his siblings, Elizabeth Marshall, Marylee Shephard, Eva Collins, Estelle Pinckney, James Hall Sr., Clarence Hall, Isaac Hall, Sam Hall, Lillie Mae Powell, and Lawrence Hall; and his daughter, Georgia Mae.
George peacefully departed this this world while celebrating the Lord on Thursday, Sept 13, 2018. He was surrounded by family, lifted in love, and in the presence of the Holy Spirit. He will be forever missed, and his legacy of love will be shared by his wife, Dorothy Mae Middleton Hall; his children; Betty (George D. McClenan); Marshall (Lucretia), George Jr. (Ralphine), Audrey (Kenroy), Tracy (Charlene), Mavis and Stephen George; sister, Mable H. Brown; sister in-law, Annie P. Hall; brothers-in-law, Alonzo (Carla), Peter, Arthur (Ruby), Silas (Audrey), Benjamin (Valerie) and David Middleton; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends in Christ.
