This donation is in honor of the late Maj. David Travis Sr., father-in-law of my sister Alice Larkins-Travis. He will be greatly missed. In his long life, Maj. David Travis, Sr. gave many years of admirable service to his country, his community and his church. He also showed a welcoming attitude to the Larkins family, linked to the Travis family by the marriage of Alice and Maj. Travis’ son David. My consolations to Alice, David and to the other Travis family members for their loss.

David Joseph Travis, Sr., a retired Major in the U.S. Army and former Science High School teacher, passed away on October 8, 2022 in Lyons, New Jersey. Born on January 4, 1935 in Newark, David was the eldest of the eight children of Samuel and Louise Travis. David enjoyed a wonderful childhood in his close-knit, loving family. David graduated from Southside (now Shabazz) High School in Newark and began his college career at Jersey City State. In 1958 he earned his B.A. at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. He was a Dean's List student and a superb athlete, excelling in track, basketball, and football. He also had the opportunity to do ecumenical work in Brazil the summer between his sophomore and junior years. After graduation he taught in Harlem, New York for two years and in 1960 was drafted into the Army. He soon found himself fighting in the trenches of the Vietnam War where he completed two tours of duty. His third tour was state side. David was frequently commended by his superiors for his courage and exemplary leadership skills, and rose to the rank of Major. He was injured in the line of duty during the War and returned home to his proud family with the Purple Heart. In addition David was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor Device for heroism in ground combat. His brave and heroic service in Vietnam was documented in many newspapers, such as The Star Ledger and The New York Times. After serving his country for twenty years David retired from the Army. Mr. Travis was a beloved and innovative teacher of physics, chemistry and earth sciences at the prestigious Science High School in Newark for fifteen years, retiring in 1997. Throughout his life David had a great love of family and enjoyed all family gatherings such as parties, cookouts, family reunions, and numerous trips to cultural events, which he often organized himself. His attachment to his family was unsurpassed. Even in his later years David kept in touch with all of his children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and cousins and enjoyed each and every phone call, email, Zoom meeting, and visit, virtual or in-person. David was an aficionado of all types of music, including jazz, classical, Broadway and gospel, to name a few. He would credit his third grade teacher with teaching him and his classmates how to waltz and he loved to tell about how he learned to sing "The Messiah" as a fifteen year old high school student in Newark. He had a great signing voice and loved to harmonize with his son, David, Jr. and daughter Nancy. Blessed with a deep and abiding faith, David and his wife Louise were longtime members of the Elmwood United Presbyterian Church community. For many years David served the Church as an elder. Left to treasure David's memory are his wife of thirty-five years, Louise Melvin Travis, daughter Nancy and son-in-law Nelson of Laurel, Maryland, grandson Omar of Los Angeles, California, son David Jr. and daughter-in-law Alice of North Plainfield, New Jersey, daughter June and son-in-law Lawrence of Burtonsville, Maryland, grandson Jordan of Baltimore, Maryland, sisters Phyllis of Southington, Connecticut and Ada of Dublin, Georgia, brother Jerry of Baltimore, Maryland and many cousins, nieces and nephews, and numerous other family members including his "family" at Elmwood United Presbyterian Church in East Orange, New Jersey. A celebration of David's life will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Elmwood United Presbyterian Church, 135 Elmwood Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey. Visitation will begin at 10 am and the Funeral Service will immediately follow at 11:00 am. Internment will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the Scholarship Fund at Elmwood United Presbyterian Church.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
